Just a quick note to let you know that the meeting scheduled for Monday, September 13th regarding the Karig Estate development has been postponed due to an unforeseen conflict. The developer hopes to be able to re-schedule the meeting for the following Monday night the 20th. I will advise you on this as soon as I get confirmation. And I mis-spoke in my previous email regarding Gant Redmon. Mr. Redmon is not the lawyer for the developer. He is the neighborhood contact and is assisting with setting up the meeti ...Continue Reading

As we reach the end of summer, I want to provide an update on a few things for your information. Your board has been working throughout the summer as issues have continued to be brought forward, and you will see some discussed below. In addition to the items highlighted in this email, SHA continues to engage city staff on the proposed AHDC housing project next to the Fire Station on Seminary Road. We do not have updated information to share at this time, but we continue to monitor and actively participate in ...Continue Reading

We are certainly in the dog days of August now! I hope you are managing to stay cool. Given the invasion of the oak itch mites that are apparently feeding on the cicada eggs, as well as all of us, being outside is now a hazardous occupation. I wanted to update you on a few items that are percolating now. The first is the announcement that the real estate brokerage firm KLNB has been selected to market the redevelopment of Landmark to retail tenants. In a recent Washington Business Journal article, it was reporte ...Continue Reading

As summer rolls on, our SHA monthly meetings have taken our usual summer break for July and August. This does not mean, however, that our work is on vacation. To follow up on my email of June 23rd, City Council on July 6th gave final approval of the rezoning of the Inova Hospital site on Seminary Road from R-8 and R-20 to RB. R-8 and R-20 zoning permit only single-family homes, which would have allowed for 162 homes on the site. The RB zoning allows townhomes, and will make it possible for a future developer to build ...Continue Reading

Happy Summer Solstice. I wanted to follow up from my last email and update everyone with information about the City Council Public Hearing last Saturday where the Inova Hospital rezoning application was discussed. Again, I must apologize for the length of this message, but this has been a very complex issue, and I want to try and accurately convey what has happened. As background, Seminary Hill Association (SHA) now understands we have a written and signed private agreement with Inova dating from 2002. This agreement ...Continue Reading

I apologize for the mistake I made in the email you just received. The permitted construction hours in Alexandria are 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. I had reversed the times in my email indicating that construction could start at 6 a.m. and that is incorrect. Construction at Episcopal will begin at 7 a.m., Monday through Friday. ...Continue Reading

Welcome to June with the buzzing cicadas and what looks like some summer weather for us. I have several items to bring to your attention today, and I apologize in advance for the length of this message. Feel free to skip any portions of this that are not of interest to you. Wednesday afternoon I attended the funeral of long-time SHA board member, Richard Hobson. It would be hard to put into words all that Dick meant to Seminary Hill over decades. I don’t think there was any major decision our Associa ...Continue Reading

I wish everyone an early Happy Memorial Day weekend! I hope that you have not had too many close encounters with the cicadas that have now made their presence known in our yards and in our ears! I want to draw your attention to an important virtual meeting that will take place tomorrow night, *Tuesday, May 25th at 7:00 p.m.* regarding the proposed housing development on Seminary Road next to the fire station. Here is the information from AHDC about how to register for the meeting: AHDC is hosting its second pub ...Continue Reading

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying Spring. As usual, we have had a full month of city meetings. I want to update you on a few upcoming events that should be of interest. First, the West End Coalition is sponsoring a virtual City Council Candidates Forum this Saturday, May 1st from 2:00-4:00 pm. All the candidates for Council are participating, so it should be an interesting afternoon. The Zoom link for this event is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86242846509?pwd=NUU5bGF6bTdmSThSNExYWXY3d0FYQT09 Passcode: 9041 ...Continue Reading

Welcome to Spring, even if it certainly doesn’t feel like Spring today!! For those of you who celebrate Easter, I wish you a Happy Easter. As usual, we have several items of interest to highlight. First, our Seminary Hill Association Board meeting will be Thursday, April 8th at 7:00 pm. We will have a presentation by the city on the proposed cohousing initiative which seems to have come out of nowhere and is on a fast track for Council approval. Cohousing allows unrelated individuals to live together in a ...Continue Reading
